The Mental Health Services Department provides consultation and direct services to teachers, students and parents to help students meet their individual goals and objectives when maladaptive patterns of social emotional behavior interfere with access to their educational program.
Direct services can be provided to general education students and special education students as a related special education service when required for pupils to benefit form their special education program. Both avenues to obtain service require a referral from a teacher, school psychologist or administrator; parental consent (in most cases); and an assessment by a mental health clinician.
Direct services are considered successful when the student has integrated the skills and insights targeted and is consistently using them in place of maladaptive behaviors. Other signals of improvement include improved positive symptoms in the areas of mood, focus, confidence, esteem and attitude as well as other indicators such as more stable relationships, improved attendance and grades, and an overall decrease in negative symptoms.
