Homework Policy

  • Homework is assigned to practice and reinforce skills introduced in class. It is necessary to schedule times for homework just as times for other activities are scheduled. Ordinarily homework is assigned Mondays through Thursdays.  If a child has a long term project or has work to be completed as a result of absence due to illness, then the expectation will be to complete work during the weekend.

Fairfield Suisun District Guidelines for homework are as follows:

Kindergarten -         10 minutes (in addition to reading time)

Grade 1-                    10-20 minutes (in addition to reading time)

Grade 2-                    20-30 minutes (in addition to reading time)

Grade 3-                    30-40 minutes (in addition to reading time)

Grade 4-                    40-50 minutes (in addition to reading time)

Grade 5-                    50-60 minutes (in addition to reading time)

Grade 6-                    60-70 minutes (in addition to reading time)

Grade 7-                    1.5-2 hours (in addition to reading time)

Grade 8-                    1.5-2 hours (in addition to reading time)

Reading each night is important for every child. Frequent visits to public libraries are extremely beneficial and cultivate life-long habits.  Every parent is encouraged to build this time into their child’s schedule.

Parents can assist their child(ren) by providing the following at home:

Designate a quiet space, free of distraction to complete assignments.
Provide supplies which include pencils, pens, paper, crayons, markers, ruler, glue, scissors, and a dictionary appropriate to the child’s age.
Determine a specific location where completed homework will be placed when it is completed (preferably in a folder, then in the backpack)
Convey the message Homework Is Important
Sometimes your child may not be able to complete an assignment because he/she is having difficulty.  If your child works diligently and still has not completed the assignment, simply write a note to the teacher stating your child needs some additional support.
