Welcome to the 2018-2019 School Year
Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! I am proud to begin my sixth year of serving as Superintendent of Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District. In 1986, during a teacher shortage similar to the one we are currently experiencing, I was recruited from South Dakota to teach in FSUSD. The majority of my career has been dedicated to FSUSD, and I take great pride in this district and community.
Our number one goal is student achievement. Our district is proud of the many educational opportunities offered. Each of our K-8 elementary schools have a specialized theme, which is tied to a Career Technical Education (CTE) pathway at our high schools. Our Early College High School, located on the Solano Community College campus, had its first graduating class last spring. Of those graduates, nine students received Associates Degrees. Our Independent Study program allows students the option of taking many classes online while still receiving support from a credentialed teacher. The Public Safety Academy is a school of choice, which allows students to explore careers of public safety in a paramilitary environment. The Matt Garcia Career and College Academy is a small, grades 6-12 program which focuses on the CTE pathway of hospitality. These schools along with International Baccalaureate, Partners for Educational Progress (PEP), Gifted and Talented Education (GATE), Leader in Me, Summer STEM Camp, and our award winning robotics and music programs make FSUSD a wonderful place to learn and grow.
Thanks to the voters, FSUSD is benefiting from the passage of Measure J. The $249M General Obligation Bond will provide funds for new and upgraded facilities. These upgrades and improvements will improve the security of our campuses and provide welcoming and nurturing environments. A great deal of construction is happening throughout our district. Much of this construction will continue throughout the school year. Please click here to connect to our Facilities Department website, which will provide you with details on these construction projects. Our district has also committed 1.25% of its general fund dollars to deferred maintenance, so that we can continue to keep our facilities maintained and clean. This past summer, our Maintenance and Operations Department was busy repairing asphalt, roofs, and floors. Many painting projects were also completed. It is impressive to see the improvements these past few years in regards to the maintenance and cleanliness of our campuses.
Our district continues to focus on improving student attendance. We have reduced our chronic absenteeism rate over the past few years. We will continue to improve this statistic, so that none of our students miss 10% or more of their school year for any reason. Students who are chronically absent have a greater risk of dropping out of school and not graduating from high school. Our district is committed to supporting parents and students who struggle with student attendance.
Our district is grateful to our Fairfield and Suisun Communities and appreciates the many partnerships throughout Solano County.
