New Health and Wellness Treats Guidelines
August 10, 2017
Dear Crescent Star Families,
Many families love to share special treats (cookies, cupcakes, etc) with their child’s classmates. This year, we are asking that you now choose non-food items to share with students.
State and Federal law has mandated that every school district create and follow a Wellness Policy to encourage healthy eating habits, physical exercise, and nutrition education. There are also too many food allergens that are not listed and may expose kiddos to something unknown.
New guidelines are now requiring us to change our ways. A full version of the Wellness Policy and other information is online at https://www.fsusd.org/Page/15094
Classroom Celebrations and Incentives: Principals, teachers and parent groups shall restrict Foods of Minimal Nutritional Value (FMNV), cupcakes, donuts, cookies or any other items not considered healthy in their classrooms. Many families wish to donate special items to celebrate their child’s birthday with their classmates.
We encourage you to consider non-food items, such as:
- Sidewalk chalk
- Small items that children enjoy
- Pencils, gadgets from Oriental Trading Co.
In the event that parents would like to bring food, they are required to complete a Classroom Event Food Approval Form at least two weeks prior to the event. Nutritional information and ingredients must accompany the request. Please see your child’s classroom teacher or school office for the form. Thank you for helping support a healthy lifestyle for all of our Crescent students!
