Suisun Elementary students and staff came together to welcome California Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson. The already excited crowd that filled the packed multi-purpose room was shocked and amazed when their very own Jessica Villanueva was named the first Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District teacher to earn the Milken Educator Award.
CA Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson and Superintendent Kris Corey joined Milken Educator Awards Senior Vice President Dr. Jane Foley in presenting the award to Mrs. Villanueva, Second grade teacher at Suisun Elementary. The Milken Educator Award comes with a $25,000 cash prize that she could use however she chooses.
"This Milken Educator Award is an honor for Fairfield-Suisun Unified and especially for this school," said Corey. "Jessica Villanueva has dedicated years to Suisun Elementary and has such compassion and devotion for kids. Students look up to her and colleagues appreciate and respect her. It is an honor to have her represent Fairfield-Suisun Unified in California and throughout the nation."
Milken educators are selected for what they have achieved and for the promise of what they will accomplish. Besides the $25,000 prize and public recognition, Villanueva's honor includes membership in the national Milken Educator Network, a group of more than 2,700 top principals, teachers and specialists dedicated to strengthening education. Unlike most teacher recognition programs, the Milken Educator Awards has no formal nomination or application process. Candidates are sourced through a confidential selection process and then reviewed by blue ribbon panels appointed by state departments of education.
It is an honor to have such wonderful and excellent staff influencing our students on a daily basis. Congratulations to Suisun Elementary's Jessica Villanueva!
