Phishing Scams Continue to Hit Schools and School Districts

Schools Must Be Wary as Phishing Scams Continue
Someone has tried to file at least three tax returns using the Social Security numbers of employees in a Texas school district. It all stems from a phishing scam that the Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco Independent School District’s business manager fell victim to by responding to a bogus email. It’s happened to four other districts in the Lone Star State this year, and the Internal Revenue Service reports that over two dozen school systems around the country have been victimized by such attacks in recent months. As a result, the agency has issued a warning urging local school officials to be wary of requests targeting tax forms and other sensitive employee data. The scam is simple: A district employee, often in the payroll or human resources department, receives an email from what looks like a central office administrator, asking for employees’ W2 forms and personal or financial information. But the email comes from a bogus account created by a criminal looking to misuse the data.
According to Tim Goree, Director of TSS, we received notification from Google that 30 accounts in our system were likely compromised. Many of the accounts belong to students so please discuss this issue with students as well. A good practice is to change your password regularly and include a number and special character.
