Fairfield, CA – On Friday, October 20, 2023, the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District (FSUSD) Adapted PE department, in partnership with Special Olympics of Northern California, showcased a day of unity, enthusiasm, and fun at the 8th Annual Special Olympics Soccer Skills Day.

The Special Olympics Soccer Skills Day, an eagerly anticipated tradition in the Fairfield-Suisun community, aims to create a vibrant platform where students of all abilities can come together and enjoy an exhilarating day of sports and camaraderie.

Shirley Cavasos, an Adapted Physical Education Specialist who plays a large part in coordinating these events, shared her thoughts on the event, saying, "We are hoping to create and build friendship with our students and the community. This is also a way for our students in special education to participate in sports and a time for them to shine."

This year, the event has been split into two days, with the second event being held on October 26, 2023, at K.I. Jones Elementary School.  Last week’s event held at Crescent Elementary School, saw an incredible turnout of enthusiastic students, volunteers, and special guests. Representatives from Suisun Fire and the Suisun Police Department generously offered their time and support, to help make the day an even better experience for all students involved.

Attendees at the event participated in a variety of activities, including soccer drills, games, dancing, and team-building. These activities not only fostered physical fitness but also promoted social interaction, teamwork, and a shared sense of achievement.

The 8th Annual Special Olympics Soccer Skills Day is part of a broader initiative within the FSUSD Adapted PE department to ensure that every student, regardless of their abilities, feels valued, included, and empowered. By bringing students with and without disabilities together, the program has successfully broken down barriers and encouraged an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding within the community.
