Fairfield, CA – On Tuesday, January 30th, 2024, students at Crystal Middle School from the accelerated 6th and 7th grade math classes, along with students from the Special Education math labs for 7th and 8th graders embarked on an exciting field trip to Oracle Park in San Francisco. This unique experience was part of the Math by Numbers Program designed to engage students in mathematical concepts through the lens of sports.

The Math by Numbers Program kicked off with an interactive presentation that delved into the mathematical principles underlying baseball. Students had the opportunity to explore hitting and pitching statistics, discovering how mathematical concepts are applied in real-life scenarios within the game.

A highlight of the presentation was the exploration of different angles required to hit a home run, providing students with a tangible connection between geometry and the sport they love. Through engaging activities and demonstrations, students gained a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts while experiencing the thrill of learning in a dynamic setting.

"We were excited to see how much our students and staff enjoyed the experience at Oracle Park," said Samantha Coughran, Assistant Principal at Crystal Middle School. "The Math by Numbers field trip was not only educational but also incredibly engaging. Everyone got a lot out of the day, and it was inspiring to see our students making connections between math and the real world in such a compelling environment."

Following the presentation, students were treated to a private tour of Oracle Park and immersed themselves in the rich history and unique features of the stadium. This firsthand experience provided students with a behind-the-scenes look at one of the most iconic sports venues in the country, further enhancing their appreciation for the intersection of math and sports.
