Fairfield, CA (September 18, 2025) – Armijo High School welcomed back two remarkable International Baccalaureate (IB) alumni last month, Charles Tralka (Class of 2016) and Xylina Rusit (Class of 2015), who are now Ph.D. candidates at the University of California, Berkeley. Their visit fostered a sense of community and provided an inspiring, real-world learning experience for students in Anatomy & Physiology, Biology, Environmental Science, and IB Environmental Systems & Societies classes.
The alumni shared their journey from Armijo to higher education, presenting their doctoral research in integrative biology and molecular genetics. This visit was founded on the strong relationships between staff and students, with the alumni eager to return and guide the next generation. They shared practical wisdom on applying to college, securing research positions, and pursuing advanced degrees.
“It was so inspiring to hear from alumni who were once in our shoes. Seeing what Charles and Xylina are doing now makes me believe I can reach my academic goals and pursue a doctorate in psychology!” – Lily K., IB Senior
“Having our alumni return to Armijo and teach our students is a full-circle moment. It shows the power of the positive relationships built in our schools and how our graduates come back to invest in the community that helped them succeed.” – Melaine Moore, Science Department Chair/IB Teacher
This visit highlights the strength of the Armijo and FSUSD community. It enriched students’ scientific understanding and showed the long-term impact of an IB education. By welcoming back alumni to share their knowledge and mentor students, we reinforce the idea that success is a collective effort, built on the strong foundation of positive relationships. We extend our sincere gratitude and appreciation to Charles and Xylina for taking the time to visit with our students!
