Soccer season is in full swing across Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District — from our youngest learners to our student-athletes of all abilities!

At Mary Bird Early Childhood Education Center (ECEC), 230 preschoolers are taking part in Soccer Shots, a weekly program that teaches soccer skills through fun, developmentally appropriate lessons aligned to the California Preschool Learning Foundations. For two eight-week long sessions in fall and spring, students head outside once per week for lessons that emphasize character development and reinforce social-emotional learning practiced in the classroom.

By choosing to use state preschool funds to provide this opportunity, Mary Bird ECEC ensures that every child — regardless of background — has access to enriching, active learning experiences. The excitement is contagious, with students joyfully shouting, “I love soccer!” as they take the field each week.

On October 10th, that same spirit of play and inclusion filled the air at Crescent Elementary, where the school hosted the 10th Annual FSUSD/Special Olympics Unified Soccer Event. Approximately 200 students from four schools came together to play, connect, and celebrate inclusion.

Thanks to FSUSD’s Adapted PE Department and Special Olympics Northern California, students of all abilities trained, competed, and cheered one another on — showcasing the power of teamwork, friendship, and unity. Local agencies such as the Suisun City Police and Fire Departments also joined in, showing community support and energy for our amazing students.

From preschoolers learning their first kicks to older students championing inclusion, soccer is helping our schools build confidence, connection, and community — one goal at a time.
