Students are ready for the new school year to begin on August 13 because of the commitment of so many local partners at this annual event

Fairfield, CA (August 12, 2025) - Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District (FSUSD) hosted its Annual Back-to-School Resource Fair on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Fairfield. The long-standing tradition — now in its 22nd year — once again brought the community together to ensure FSUSD students are prepared for a successful school year.

This year’s event saw an enthusiastic turnout, with nearly 1,900 backpacks distributed to students, more than 60 free haircuts provided by local barbers, and 80 complimentary eye exams offered by the Lions Club. Music filled the air courtesy of volunteer DJ Mel on one side of the event, and 95.3 KUIC on the other.

A free vaccine clinic provided by Solano Public Health stayed busy into the afternoon giving hundreds of immunizations, with the line wrapping around the corner of the building for much of the time. Staff stayed until well after the event was supposed to finish - ensuring every family member who needed a vaccine received one!

This fair would not have been possible without the combined efforts of the Fairfield Professional Firefighters’ Association, Fairfield Police Homeless Intervention and Community Action Teams, the City of Fairfield, Kaiser Permanente, the Fairfield Professional Firefighters’ Association and the Fairfield Police Officers and Managers Associations, who generously sponsored the meals and foam machine.

One moment that captured the spirit of the day came from a young student admiring his fresh haircut in the mirror. With a big grin, he kept saying, “It looks good.” He then turned to his barber and added, “You did good.” FSUSD Superintendent Jennifer Sachs reflected on the day’s impact:

“This is what community looks like — local businesses, first responders, and educators all working together to set our students up for success. I am deeply grateful for the partnerships that make this event possible year after year.”

Marbeya Ellis, FSUSD Family Resource Center Manager, shared her excitement over the turnout:

“The Back-to-School Resource Fair has become such a meaningful tradition in FSUSD. Every backpack, every haircut, every meal given out represents a child starting school feeling supported and confident. That’s what this is all about.”

Jessica Reed, Assistant Director for FSUSD Student and Family Services, echoed that sentiment:

“The smiles on the kids’ faces said it all. We are honored to be able to connect families with resources that make a real difference, and we couldn’t do it without the incredible generosity of our community partners.”

The day embodied FSUSD’s commitment to meeting student needs beyond the classroom and featured more than 65 community organizations offering resources, information, and support to families. The success of this annual event would not have been possible without the invaluable support and dedication of our many sponsors and partners, including the Fairfield Police Department, Fairfield Fire Department, Fairfield Professional Firefighters’ Association 1186, Fairfield Police Officers and Managers Association, Kaiser Permanente, Solano Public Health, Valley Strong Credit Union, KUIC 95.3, DJ Mel, Pop of Joy, Walmart, United Methodist Men and Costco.
