Nelda Mundy and Suisun Valley students amongst those who have participated this year
Fairfield, CA (April 28, 2026) – Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District (FSUSD) is highlighting the continued success of the School Water Education Program (SWEP), which has been refreshed this year by the Solano Resource Conservation District (SRCD) to provide updated, hands-on water conservation lessons for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
According to SRCD Education Program Manager, Stephanie Stock, more than 175 teachers have already implemented the free classroom lessons, reaching close to 5,000 students at 36 schools across FSUSD and other partner districts. The updated curriculum uses interactive activities, games, demonstrations, and real-world scenarios to help students better understand the importance of water conservation and how everyday choices impact local water resources.
“This program brings learning to life in a way that students truly connect with,” said Suisun Valley K-8 School Principal Tessa Pryor. “Our students love to engage in hands-on experiences. And they don’t just learn about conservation - they begin to see themselves as active stewards of their environment.”
Nelda Mundy Elementary School Principal Julie Smith also praised the program’s impact on student engagement and learning. “Our students were excited, curious, and fully involved in every part of the lesson,” she said. “The SWEP program makes complex concepts accessible and meaningful.”
SRCD shared that the program’s refreshed content introduces students to both familiar and lesser-known conservation strategies, including water-wise landscaping, seasonal watering practices, and efficient outdoor water use. Older students in middle and high school are also beginning to explore more advanced applications such as water budgeting and sustainable landscape design.
FSUSD Superintendent Jennifer Sachs emphasized the district’s commitment to experiential, real-world learning opportunities. “By connecting classroom lessons to the real world, SWEP empowers our students to apply their learning and shape the future of our environment.”
The updated lessons are part of a broader effort to strengthen watershed education across the region and provide students with opportunities to learn through exploration, discussion, and hands-on activities that extend beyond the classroom. During the 2025-26 school year, FSUSD schools that have already or plan to participate in one of the SRCD programs include: Cleo Gordon, Crescent, Dan O Root, Fairview, Grange, Nelda Mundy, PSA, Rolling Hills, Suisun, Suisun Valley and Sullivan. SWEP lessons will continue throughout the school year across Solano County schools, and will be available next school year as well.
