Families come together for hands-on events, showing that learning is most powerful through shared exploration

Fairfield, CA (April 17, 2026) – Across the district, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) events are creating unforgettable experiences that bring students, families, and educators together through hands-on learning, and a shared experience of discovery, innovation, and fun.

At Sullivan Language Immersion Academy led by Principal Daniel Garcia, their recent STEAM Family Day was designed to highlight the importance of these academic subjects while strengthening the connection between school and home. In preparation, students completed projects at home and proudly presented them in Spanish, showcasing their learning and bilingual skills during the event.

“This event is a powerful example of what happens when we bring learning to life and invite families into the experience. We are truly thankful to have an amazing Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), especially Janet Gassaway, to help us support our event,” said Principal Garcia. “Our students not only demonstrated their understanding of STEAM concepts, but also built confidence by presenting in Spanish.”

Over at E. Ruth Sheldon Academy, which also recently held an event, Principal Lisa Lewis echoed the impact of their Family STEAM Night: “I love that we provide monthly family events that bring our community together to bond and have fun,” shared Lisa Lewis, Sheldon Academy Principal. “During our Family STEAM Night, it was incredible to see parents even more engaged than the students! The smiles, laughter, and friendly competition between parents and their children truly made it a memorable evening. It was a night filled with joy and meaningful learning experiences for everyone involved.”

At STEAM events across the district, families enjoy interactive time with their students, filled with engaging stations that encourage curiosity, collaboration, and exploration. From designing structures in earthquake engineering to experimenting in the states of matter lab, participants of all ages have the opportunity to build, test, and problem-solve together. Additional highlights include things like a STEAM design studio, a tech exploration zone, and engaging math activities with Miracle Math.

Superintendent Jennifer Sachs added, “Family STEAM events are a powerful example of what makes FSUSD special. When students, families, and staff come together to explore and learn side by side, it not only deepens understanding but also builds a strong, connected community that supports student success.”

These STEAM events continue to demonstrate that learning extends far beyond the classroom. By creating opportunities for families to explore together, FSUSD is helping foster positive learning environments, spark curiosity and build lasting connections.
