Fairfield, CA (May 26, 2026) – At Tolenas Elementary School, families and students recently participated in an exciting month of literacy learning through the school’s Family Literacy Series. Designed for Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and kindergarten students and their families, the four-part series throughout March focused on helping young learners build strong foundational literacy skills and grow into confident readers.
Each event featured engaging, hands-on activities and decodable readers that gave families meaningful opportunities to practice reading fluency together. From letter sounds and phonics games to interactive storytelling and guided reading practice, the series strengthened the connection between school and home.
“Reading is one of the most important skills our students will ever learn, and we know families play a critical role in that journey,” shared Tolenas Principal, Lisa Davis. “The Family Literacy Series gave our TK and kindergarten students and families the tools, confidence, and encouragement to practice literacy skills together in fun and meaningful ways.”
School Literacy Specialist Michelle Riley said the events were intentionally designed to make literacy accessible and engaging for families. “Our goal was to help families feel empowered and excited about supporting reading at home,” Riley said. “It was wonderful to see families learning and growing together throughout the series.”
“Strong literacy skills are key to student success, and this program aligns with our district's goal for every student to read by the end of 2nd grade,” said FSUSD Superintendent Jennifer Sachs. “We are proud to see engaging and supportive family events in place that ignite our students' potential.”
When students see literacy as something joyful and interactive, it builds confidence and creates stronger readers. These events reflected the school’s commitment to working in partnership with families, ensuring every child develops a strong foundation in literacy from the very beginning.
